World Cup Roundup Kuhlanu

Just another exciting World Cup post!

Ghana v Australia

I keep highlighting the Aussies because I gave them crap for changing qualifying leagues. Their latest effort, though, showed they have a little more grit than I thought. Down to 10 men, the 'Roos held a 1-1 draw with Ghana to keep slim slim hopes alive. After taking an early lead, Harry Kewell got called for a hand ball used to keep out a certain goal, and Ghana nailed a game tying PK. Most fans were sure that the Aussies were cooked, but give them credit for hanging on.

Cameroon v Denmark

How about the Danes? They eliminated Cameroon with a thrilling strike from Rommedahl. It was a 10th mintue netter from Eto'o that sent the 'Roon fans into a frenzy, but a hard working Denmark squad ame through huge on the comeback, including the brilliant move from Rommedahl that resulted in the game winner. This game, which I watched in it's entirety, was way more entertaining than I would have thought.

Italy v New Zealand

Did the All Whites come away with the most underrated shocking effort of the tournament so far. Written off for getting in through an easy qualifying route, NZ was expected to go three and out in the group. Instead, they shocked all the pizza eaters out there by holding a 1-1 draw with the current champs. Mark Paston was straight up amazing between the pipes, only allowing an Italy goal on a penalty. Despite dominating the match, Italy just couldn't get through. Props to the Kiwis!

Brazil v Ivory Coast

Am I the only one not shocked by the 3-1 win for Brazil. I didn't think Ivory Coast would be good this time around, and everyone laughed at me. Outside of Drogba's late goal, they didn't have much here. How about Kaka going off? These refs love to be in the spotlight.

Portugal v North Korea

I would have woken up at 4:00 am if I knew this game was going to go down this way. A 7-0 win for Ronaldo's side is easily the most impressive win so far. I mean, I know North Korea is a shit team, but 7 goals is pretty unreal. After getting just 1 goal in the first half, Portugal struck with 3 to open the second half (53, 56, and 60) and 3 more to close the second half (81, 87, and 89). Tiago was the only multi goal player. Wow.

As we continue to work our way out of the groups, let's look at who seems to be coming out now:

A: Uruguay and Mexico are both +3 on France and South Africa.

B: Argentina has 6 points with South Korea and Greece each at 3. Nigeria has a doughnut.

C: Slovenia leads with 4, as the US and England both trail with 2. The US holds a slight advantage heading into Wednesday's big match with Algeria.

D: Ghana leads with 4, while Germany and Serbia each have 3, and the Aussies trail with 1.

E: Netherlands leads with 6, while Japan and Denmark work for the 2 spot with 3 a piece. Cameroon has a big nil.

F: Paraguay leads with 4, as Italy and New Zealand trail at 2. Slovakia holds fading hope at the bottom.

G: Brazil and Portugal are running away with the group of death.

H: Chile are at the top with 6 and the Swiss are trying to hold on to the second spot, but Spain has a chance to change their zero to a three against Honduras in about 25 minutes.

A lot of shifting will go on before we get to the round of 16, so we'll hold off judgment of the LSF predictions until it's set, eh?

I'm nervous waiting for Wednesday morning.
