*No wonder we suck! Our players are napping during the games. Come on Callaspo!
Most in the "real" media are quick to point out how the Angels 7-4 win over Texas last night was a "meaningless victory." But, we all know that our Angels are on their way to a 13-0 finish (counting last night), while Texas finishes 0-13 and Oakland loses however many games they need to lose for us to win the West. Yeah, I guess I'm that kind of fan.
The pluses:
+The win prevented the Rangers from having a chance to clinch on our field.
+Unlikely heroes got some run producing hits: Wood, Mathis, etc.
+Big Baby Weaver went 6.67 innings of 3 run ball, and while he only punched out 2 (and will probably now not beat King Felix for the strikeout lead), he had a solid game against the eventual AL West Champs...and even got the win!
+How about that closer? Fernando Rodney continues to try and turn the hardened hearts of Halo fans with a shutout inning, a save, and 2 Ks (not to mention a hit and a hit batter).
+Bourjos-my-Nourjos grabbed 2 steals, flashes those speedy quads.
+Bobby Abreu also stole a base, and also was a multi-hit guy, along with Speedy Pete.
+Alberto Callaspo was yanked from the leadoff spot, and he didn't go 0'fer!
The minuses:
-Juan Rivera had his grand slam pulled back by Julio Borbon.
-A big 10 men were left on base.
-Thanks to that non-grand-slam, Juan Rivera went 0 for 3.
-No Hank Conger, no Mark Trumbo.
-This is kind of nit picking, but Hat-cisco gave up a pesky eighth inning bomb.
At 74-76, the Angels are a little closer to that goal of .500 or better. The Halos are now 9.5 back of the continuingly slipping Rangers and still 1.5 back of those hated A's. With 12 games to go, half of those against the Rangers, us idiots are still having hope that there is something crazy that can happen to right the wrongs of this season. Will it happen? No. Will that stop me from pretending that it may happen? Definitely not. Tonight is the second game of the penultimate series against the Rangers, and if you've ever wanted to call a sweep for the underdogs, this may be the series. Tonight we send Ervin "El Rosario" Santana (16-9, 3.93) to the hill against Colby Lewis (11-12, 3.84) (I hate Colby!). After losing 7 in a row, Lewis has won two straight as he sets his sights on Los Halos, and this is his first outing against us since 2007. Meanwhile, Ervin had his unlikely chase for 20 wins stopped last time out in an eleven inning loss. While he won't get 20, he does need just one win to set a new personal best. Who would have thunk it? Well, I guess LSF reader should have, since I've been talking about it every 5 days since the All-Star break.
Just a sad bit of news for our undersized ugly toothed shortstop, as Erick Aybar has been officially ruled out for the remainder of the season with his sports hernia. Will this be the moment that Brandon Wood decides to step it up and prove he should be our starting SS for 2011? Ha. I'm funny.
Let's get #2 of 13 against the Rangers tonight.
