Discover Orange Bowl: Miami, FL, USA 1/3/11 5:30pm

Stanford (11-1) v. Virginia Tech (11-2)
Stanford favored by 3

Let's face it, outside of USC, the PAC-10 has not been taken seriously recently. Don't get me wrong, they get more credit than most other conferences, but SEC apologists say it's no match. Lovers of Texas and Oklahoma tell Westerners to think again.

Stanford has a chance to change all of that.

The Cardinal are a solid, solid team. Their offense, highly praised, takes a ton of pressure off of their defense. And their defense, which has posted three shutouts on the season, has given up only 27 TDs.

On the opposite end of the field, Virginia Tech commands everyone's respect. Sure, their loss to James Madison had sportswriters writing them off as undisciplined and underachievers. But how did they respond? By winning 11 straight games against a tough schedule of teams.

The QBs, Luck and Taylor, are getting all the praise: warranting comparisons to Elway and Vick, respectively -- proving that there are only a handful of stories that the exceptionally unoriginal sports media like to recycle. Luck does not seem like a NFL first-season ready QB to me, sorry. Taylor does not seem like the amazing runner Vick was. Let's hold off on these comparisons, please?

Stanford's offense will be tested by Tech's defense. I do not see them putting up the type of numbers they have on other teams. That being said, aren't they good enough for 28? If so, I think they win. What's the over-under on this game? Someone get me to Vegas.

The pick: Stanford - their victory would set up a NC game that could prove the PAC-10 is the most competitive conference in football.

The line: They cover, but I look for a close one.
